Dominique Dorie French, b. 1958 "Lavandes au Ciel" Oil on canvas Signed 'Dorie' lower right 15 ¾ by 31 ½ in. w/frame 24 ½ by 40 in. Dominique Dorie was born in Versailles in 1958. At the age of sixteen he began working in the Louvre as a restorer of sculptures. He enjoyed the opportunities to study the many masterpieces hanging on the walls of the great museum and felt impelled to sketch them but had very little free time to do so. Nevertheless he had several small "exhibitions" by hanging his work in the evenings on the fences of the church of St. Germain des Pres. 1977 marked the turning point for Dorie. He won a scholarship offered by the city of Paris, which enabled him to enroll in a night course in drawing. As his skills in that field improved, he developed a desire to use color and began to paint in oil. From 1974 on, Dorie had participated in a number of exhibitions in towns surrounding Paris. He also had two one-man shows in Paris and one in Strasbourg between 1982 and 1984. Through the year he was working in Paris, his aesthetic perception and artistic sense have matured, but he decided to move out of Paris and go to a small village in Normandy where he is surrounded with uncluttered nature with swiftly changing light and wind where he started painting the sea, the sky and the field with wild flowers. He developed his own style depicting nature with vivid surrealistic feeling. For an artist who hung his paintings on the fences of the church of St. Germain des Pres, Dorie has traveled a long way. In 1985 he exhibited his work in the Salon de Criel and in the Salon d'Orly. He was awarded the Prix du Salon in the latter exhibition. In 1984 and 1985 he exhibited in the prestigious Salon d'Automne. In 1986 he won the Medaille d'Or at an exhibition in Deauville. Reference: E. Benezit, Vol. 4, page 1082
