"Lunchroom Conversations, " Glimpse of 1920s Black Social Life in Philadelphia
About the Item
Full of energy and elegance, this genre scene of African Americans eating and chatting in a 1920s lunchroom -- dressed to the nines in furs, fashionable hats and wide-lapeled suits -- was painted by Julius Bloch, a Philadelphia artist who depicted Black life over several decades, from the 1920s to the 1960s. Born in Germany, Bloch's family moved to Philadelphia when he was a child; as a young man he attended the School of the Pennsylvania Museum and Industrial Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Barnes Foundation. He participated in the Public Works of Art Project and his painting, "Young Worker," exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, was admired by Eleanor Roosevelt. This painting is watercolor and ink on paper. The dimensions include matte and frame; the visible painting is 10.5 inches high by 9 inches wide.).

Applegate was considered one of the New Mexico Modernists, and was accompanied on some of his painting forays by B.J.O. Nordfeldt, Andrew Dasburg and Josef Bakos.
