Lawrence Gipe (American b. 1962) 'Factory' series oil on board, 1998, Untitled No. 15. Massive, impressive and foreboding 60” x 84” mixed-media oil painting depicting a dark landscape of working industrial factories and refineries belching smoke and pollution as destructive modern tools for progress, highlighted by the word “Chimera” in fiery bold red. Reminiscent of 19th century Turner paintings of steamships on the Thames.
About Lawrence Gipe: Creating oil paintings, drawings, and video installations, he re-appropriates censored pictures and photographs to explore notions of ideology and power. As Gipe explains, "My work is inspired by the visual culture that gets stimulated by fascism and totalitarian governments and propaganda."
