"Naval Recruitment, " Classic and Charming View into 1930s Military Life

About the Item

Providing a charming and insightful depiction of the induction of young men into the U.S. Navy, this mural study -- no doubt created for the U.S. Naval Training Station at Great Lakes, north of Chicago -- includes eight scenes that show new, incoming sailors being transformed for military life. The men are shown arriving in their civvies, but are soon undergoing physicals, hair cuts, uniform fittings and other rituals that make them into proper Naval men. They arrive looking like ordinary men on the street, but they leave looking very dapper in their blue uniforms and large white seabags. The artist was Raif Henricksen, a prolific muralist who painted several works for the Edward F. Gorton School in Lake Forest, Illinois not far from the naval station, as well as for other schools, post offices and military bases in Illinois and beyond. This painting is gouache on illustration board. (Dimensions include the matte; visible painting is 9.5 inches high by 4.5 inches wide.).
