About the Item

Oil on canvas by Frederic Remington (American-1861-1900) titled “The Caravan” framed and signed lower left: “Frederic Remington, from photograph”. The painting is in very good condition. Canvas 15.5” x 25.5″ – 21” x 30.5″ framed The Caravan captures two carts drawn by yoked oxen across the dessert of Algeria, the first cart with an Englishman, Poulney Bigelow, a friend from Yale University, wearing his pith helmet with a lady in a hat and the second cart in the the forefront, has an African leopard. The Caravan was inspired by Remington’s trip to Algiers, Algeria in 1894. The painting is signed lower left “Frederic Remington from photograph” meaning it is very likely that Remington took the photograph himself. The Caravan is painted en grisaille implicating it was created for illustration in a book or periodical. In 1895, Harper’s Monthly illustrated 11 works of art associated with the trip. Frederic Sackrider Remington (October 4, 1861 - December 26, 1909) was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer who specialized in depictions of the Old American West, specifically concentrating on the last quarter of the 19th century American West and images of cowboys, American Indians, and the U.S. Cavalry. When he died at 48, Remington had produced over 3,000 signed flatworks. At the turn of the `19th century, the artist was a pioneer in the use of the roll film box camera.. As an illustrator, Remington made thousands of artworks, often en grisaille (in black-and-white oil on canvas), ink wash, and gouache that were reproduced with magazine and book text. It was the massive exposure in magazine pages that launched his fame.
