Oil Painting in the Styles of Matisse and Bonnard, by Robert Delval (1934-)

About the Item

We present you this charming piece, titled 'Nu et verdure fond rouge', which translates to 'nude and greenery on red background' in English. An oil painting on canvas, it is signed by the artist, Robert Delval (1934-) and dated 2008. The use of colours, perspective, depth, and form in this artwork demonstrates the influence of the artistic styles of Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard, which Robert Delval saw as artistic inspirations. Robert Delval, born in 1934 in Montmartre, Paris, cultivated his artistic skills amidst the street painters of his childhood neighbourhood, drawing inspiration from books and museums. At twenty-five, he embarked on a European and American journey armed solely with brushes and notebooks. Upon returning to France, he divided his time, spending spring and summer on the Mediterranean coast and autumn and winter in Megève, selling his watercolours to passers-by, including the likes of Françoise Sagan. One of his small gouache pieces, depicting a view of the Luxembourg Garden, caught the eye of André Roussard, a Montmartre framer, leading to their initial meeting in 1970. Roussard became Delval's first art dealer, supporting him for over three decades. Their first exhibition was a success, with every piece selling. Together, they curated numerous exhibitions across France, the United States, and Europe (Belgium, Switzerland...), earning Delval's works a place in esteemed art collections. Inspired by Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard, he has forged a unique style redolent with poetic power, using colour as his medium. He is now best known for his mastery of colour, his adept manipulation of perspectives, and his ability to handle expanses of colour with technical prowess, as exemplified by this very painting. The canvas of this artwork measures 55 cm in height by 46 cm in width and comes without a frame. The piece comes with an authenticity certificate from DZ Galerie.
