About the Item

Very nice lot of two oils on panel, representing two still lifes. The realism is absolutely remarkable. The first alone represents the elegance and freshness of the Hostess. A magnificent white ceramic bowl sculpted with small harmonious ruffles, composed of red fruits and pears placed on a table where a small garden butterfly still cleverly blends into the decor. The second offers us all the robustness and generosity of the master of the house. A very beautiful decorated ceramic bowl, filled with fruit from the garden or peaches, pears and grapes coexist in volumes and curves in bright and shimmering colors, on a rustic table. Period: Middle 19th circa: 1850 -1870 Dimensions: height: 41cm x width: 53cm Signature: to be identified (C.Chartier) In the 19th century, Realism is the result of a search for resemblance which is one of the most recurring themes of Western painting since ancient Greece. He rejects the inspiration and imagination of Romanticism as well as the attachment to the ancient canons of neoclassical painting. It carries social and humanitarian values that sometimes lead artists to get involved. The artistic circles of official art of the Second Empire considered all his achievements vulgar. The large formats previously reserved for history painting are used to represent scenes from contemporary life, which upsets the hierarchy of genres. Modern work, everyday life, still life, landscape and portrait are thus enhanced. These works have caught the attention of purists who agree that they were made before the Impressionist, so before 1870.
