Pair of British School Antique Paintings of Figures at Lake, 19th Century

About the Item

A finely detailed pair of paintings from the last quarter of the 19th century, the works depict morning and afternoon settings of the same lake with boaters enjoying the water. With vibrant color throughout, the works are nostalgic examples of a lazy afternoon in the countryside; one depicting a boater as he rests beneath a tree with birds flying overhead as a figure paddles his canoe in the distance before a series of thatched roof cottages, the second work capturing the red jacketed figure as he ends the day, bringing his boat to rest on the shore before heading home - in the distance a small windmill and thatched roof cottage can be seen. Large and powerful, crisply executed and housed in bold giltwood frames, this is a pair that defines a room and brings optimism to a setting. They are signed in the lower corners “H. Rainer”, an unknown artist that clearly had great skill. Measurements: 27 3/4” H x 38” W x 2 1/2” D [frame] 16 3/4” H x 27” W [canvas]. Condition report: Varnish yellowing and both paintings would benefit from a surface cleaning. “Evening” under UV shows some touch ups in the trees and along the edges, the surface somewhat obscured by the varnish cast. There is a small puncture with loss in the center-bottom quadrant in the tall grass as well as light edge loss. The second work has similar light edge loss, a tiny chip loss above the rowboat, a patch verso to upper right quadrant, some touch up under UV in the craquelure along the right side, the varnish obscuring a more full analysis of touch ups. Both works remain on their original linings with stretcher bar impressions and craquelure throughout. Frames are old and regarded with loss/cracking/discoloration as expected.
