Pair of French 18th Century Green Floral Aubusson Cartoon Mirrors
About the Item
Pair of 18th century French Aubusson cartoon green floral mirrors.
The french mirrors are Aubusson tapestry cartoon mirrors painted in gouache on paper. Tapestry cartoons are the life size models from which tapestries are woven, painted in oil on canvas or gouache on paper.
The history of Aubusson textiles dates back to the 14th century. The town of Aubusson is located in the La Marche area of France and it became renown for its famous and destinctive tapestries and textiles that reflected the height of contemporary design. Aubusson designs reflected a great diversity in themes, including depictions of religious, pastoral, and floral patterns.
Aubusson textiles were highly prized from the 17th century onward for their exceptional quality and grand designs. The colour palette of Aubusson designs tended to be more subdued compared to Savonnerie examples, and the patterns often featured elaborate floral garlands and bold central medallions.
The Aubusson floral mirrors create an exceptional pair that carries the beauty and signifance of this particular type of French design.
