"Portrait of Junaluska, " Cherokee Leader in North Carolina, by Herbert Stoops

About the Item

This strong and dignified portrait of the great Cherokee leader, Junaluska, painted by one of America's leading illustrators long after the Native American's death, uses a palette of black and mossy green to capture its subject. Junaluska lived in western North Carolina in the early 19th century and served as an ally of Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812, saving his life during the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Despite his heroism, he was exiled from his native land, participating in the Trail of Tears, before returning to North Carolina years later. The painter, Herbert Stoops, is famed for his Western scenes, and may have been commissioned to paint this portrait for a book or magazine in the 1930s or 40s. The painting is oil on canvas, and is signed and annotated by the artist. The painting is stretched but not framed.
