James Hayllar, R.B.A. British, 1829-1920 Portrait of a Young Woman Signed, dated, 'june 1889' lower left Oil on Artist's Board Painter of genre, portraits and landscapes. Born in Chichester. Settled in London in 1848. Studied with F.S. Cary and at the Royal Academy Schools. Visited Italy 1851-53. Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1851, but mainly at Suffolk Street. At first he painted mainly portraits, but in 1866 he took up the subject of children, achieving his first success with ‘Miss Lily’s Carriage stops the Way.’ Painted some portraits in the Pre-Raphaelite manner and later turned to historical works. In 1875 he rented Castle Priory, a large house at Wallingford, on the Thames, and he painted many of his pictures there, often depicting scenes of village life. Four of his daughters, Jessica, Edith, Mary, and Kate were also talented artist. J. Johnson & A. Greutzner, Dictionary of British Artist 1880-1940. G.
