"Provincetown Dock Scene, " WPA-Era Painting w/ Fishermen by Sterne in Red & Blue

About the Item

A superb example of WPA-era painting that celebrates the American worker, this dockside scene in Provincetown, Massachusetts by Maurice Sterne depicts several fishermen handling their catch after a day in the waters around Cape Cod, all in a rich, deep color palette. The men are packing barrels with fish, their boats tied up the dock behind, and the water and sky above richly painted in tones of blue, red and white. Sterne was an important figure in American Modernism, whose marriage to Mabel Dodge, one of the great champions of American Modernist painting, lasted from 1916 to 1923. It was Dodge who encouraged Sterne to come to Provincetown in 1915, and the painter used the village/artists colony as his subject on many occasions; one of his Provincetown seascapes is in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Sterne was the subject of a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1933. The painting is oil on Masonite, and retains its heavy, original frame (with a new liner). Dimensions include the frame; painting itself is 19.5 inches high by 24 inches wide.
