Raphael Soyer Original Lithograph/Watercolor, 1955, "The Dancer"

About the Item

Raphael Soyer Original Lithograph - Watercolor added by the artist's hand, 1955 The image measures 13" H x 8 ½" W. Frame measures: 23 1/4"H x 18" W Signed lower right in pencil beneath the image and also lower left in the stone. The image depicts a dancer resting. Titled "The Dancer." This watercolor/lithograph was originally from Garelick's Gallery of Michigan whose owner, Robert Garelick retired to Scottsdale, Arizona. I purchased this unique piece from his personal collection after he retired and have had it in my own for many years. Born in Russia (1899-1987) in 1899, Raphael Soyer is identified as a Social Realist because of his interest in the common man. Soyer moved with his family from Russia to the Lower East Side of New York City in 1913. Soyer attended free classes at Cooper Union and at the National Academy of Design. Guy Pene du Bois, a teacher at the Art Students League, recognized his talent and introduced him to Charles Daniel, who gave him his first solo exhibition in 1929. The success of this event secured his position as a professional artist. Both of Soyer's brothers, Moses and Isaac, were also artists. With his identical twin Moses, he painted murals for the post office in Kingessing, Pennsylvania. He also taught at the Art Students League. The Depression's economic difficulties could be seen in his subjects and unemployed men caught Soyer's eye. Women at work became a theme with Soyer after 1940.

  • Raphel Soyer Seated Girl Signed Vintage Modern Figurative Original Oil Painting
    By Raphael Soyer
    Located in Keego Harbor, MI
An original pensive oil painting on canvas titled “Seated Girl” by American artist Raphael Soyer. Hand signed bottom right. Circa 1950s. The painting depicts a young woman in red dressed in mid-20th century attire that was fashionable in the era. The walls behind her are bare, creating a stark and minimal composition. The main figure seated seems isolated among dramatic shadows and lighting, like the artworks by Edward Hopper. A unique opportunity to own an original painting from a New York Modernist painter. From a private collection. Dimensions: 34”h x 39.75”w x 1.5”d (framed). In very good vintage condition. Raphael Soyer (1899-1987) was a painter, draughtsman, and printmaker who believed that art is to survive, it must describe and express people, their lives and times. It must communicate. From an early age Soyer and his brothers Moses and Isaac were encouraged to draw by their father, a teacher of Hebrew literature and history. Forced to leave Russia in 1912, they immigrated to the United States and settled in Brooklyn. In the mid 1920s, having studied at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League, Soyer painted scenes of life on New York's east side. His portrayals of derelicts, working people, and the unemployed around Union Square during the Depression reveal more of a poignant vision of the human condition than the art of social protest popular with many of his contemporaries. Throughout his life Soyer painted people his friends, himself, studio models with an unerring eye...
