A Rest in the Courtyard, Antique French Oil on Canvas, Charles Alexandre DeBacq
About the Item
Signed and dated “A. DeBacq 1849” (Charles-Alexandre DeBacq), this charming oil on canvas painting portrays a French noble couple enjoying a snack in the courtyard after an afternoon horseback ride. Surrounded by a highly-carved giltwood frame adorned with foliage and a textured lozenge background, the small, colorful painting features a woman in a gold and silver gown, seated at a table covered with white linen with a pink stripe and a wicker basket of fruit. DeBacq had exemplary technique, finely detailing the woman’s gown with fabric folds and a high sheen, indicating that the dress was fashioned from expensive silk.
Standing behind the table is a well-dressed gentleman clad in blue and red with gold trim and white fluffy sleeves. Once again, you can visualize the nuances that indicate the man is wearing the finest fabrics. In contrast, the servant woman who is carrying a serving bowl from the house is dressed in cotton wares of drab colors, except for a green and red apron. Another staff member, a stable hand, can be seen tending to two horses in the background. Three chickens can be seen in the foreground, foraging for food at the seated woman’s feet, while a green thicket can be seen at the rear of the property, under a blue sky filled with clouds.
Charles-Alexandre DeBacq was born in Paris in 1804. A student of Antoine-Jean Gros, who was in turn a pupil of Jacques-Louis David, DeBacq specialized in historical scenes and portraits. Greatly respected in France, several of DeBacq’s paintings hang in the Palace of Versailles and in museums across Europe.

- Antique French Oil on Canvas Stag Hunt Painting in Giltwood Frame, H. De ForgesLocated in Dallas, TXA beautiful oil on canvas rendering of a stag hunt, presented in a fluted giltwood frame with a bundled husk border and large, parted leaves in the corners. The painting is signed in the lower right corner by the artist, “H. de Forges”, a member of the Barbizon French school of the late 1800s, who specialized in animal hunt scenes. The vibrancy of de Forges’ painting has not diminished over time; the colors seem to pop right off the canvas. A blue sky with some low-lying white clouds hangs above trees mainly bereft of leaves, indicating it is late autumn. Slender grass, ranging from green to brown, surrounds a watering hole in the middle of a clearing, with a single stag near the water’s edge. Eight white hunting dogs with black and tan markings surround the deer on one side of the pond. Behind the pack is a brown horse ridden by a huntsman dressed in red and black, preparing to sound the hunting horn. Two more riders in red, black, and white, also on brown horses, are emerging from a small hill behind the deer. Hunting, always a very important pastime in France, became one of the more popular genres in 19th century art, along with with quality pastoral and landscape paintings. Realism was a defining feature of the Barbizon School, as artists were attracted to spending more time living and painting in the natural world. Our hunt scene depicts the surrounding of prey, or pre-hunt revelry. The beautifully colored oil on canvas stag hunt painting...Category

- Antique Italian Oil on Canvas, The Wood Carver's Apprentice, Giovanni TorrigliaBy Giovanni Battista TorrigliaLocated in Dallas, TXA fascinating oil on canvas painting depicting a group of monks in a wood carving studio, this oil on canvas was painted by Giovanni Torriglia in the late 1800s. The darkened tones used by Torriglia (black and brown) are offset by a gilt frame with foliate details above a deep cavetto molding. Five monks are gathered around a workbench inside a workshop covered in shadows. One of the young monks, who is wearing glasses, is manipulating a sheer green fabric across the only light source: a shuttered window behind our quintet. Two senior clergymen sit behind the workbench on slatted Savonarola chairs. They gaze with delight at a junior monk hammering a chisel into wood, sculpting a winged angel. A final youthful monk leans on a wonderfully carved sgabello chair, watching the apprentice closely. The colors are splendid, accentuated by tiny nuances such as the wood chips on the floor, various completed sculptures behind the monks, and a green-leafed tree visible outside the window. Giovanni Battista Torriglia...Category
