Rural Landscape Painting Attributed to J.B. Pillement, XVIII Century

About the Item

Rural landscape painting attributed to J.B. Pillement - XVIII century. Rural landscape painting with ancient classical ruins attributed to Jean-Baptiste Pillement – XVIII century This oil-on-canvas painting attributed to French artist Jean-Baptiste Pillement (Lyon 1728-1808) depicts a rural landscape with ancient classical ruins and several characters. Originally part of a foreign private collection, the painting was acquired by the Parisian gallery and auction house Giroux in 1956; a copy of the catalogue page with the picture and the description of the painting can be seen among the lot photographs. The artwork represents a family of farmers resting together with their animals next to the riverbank of a stream at the bottom of massive architectural ruins, among which an elegant naked sculpture on column stands out. The background of the painting features a small walled village. The painting is framed with a carved and gilded wood frame. The overall condition of the painting is good. The canvas painting has been relined. Jean-Baptiste Pillement’s claim to fame is his Rococo-style landscapes – like the one here presented –, as well as his Asian-inspired subjects; he specialized in narrative scenes of the Near and Far East, which were extremely popular throughout Europe in 1700. Despite being a frequent traveller, he never visited the East; however, that area represented a constant source of inspiration for his artistic production. Raised and educated in Lyon at a local artist’s workshop, Pillement later moved to Paris, where he briefly work at the tapestry-producing Gobelins Manufactory; there, he met the Rococo style through painters such as Jean-Antoine Watteau and Francois Boucher. In 1745 he left for Madrid, where he has stayed for a long period. He has lived in London for 10 years; Pillement turned to his advantage the British taste for imaginary landscapes, and the British textile designers’ preference for Rococo motifs. He also travelled to Austria, Germany, Poland, and Portugal, thus building and enhancing his reputation as prolific engraver and interior designer. Pillement also served as painter at Marie Antoinette’s court in Versailles.
