About the Item
Beautifully painted in fresh, lovely colors on silk, this depiction of nymph and satyr, clothed in gauzy costumes like a scene from a Ballets Russes production, was painted by Stephen Haweis in the 1920s or 30s. The painter was born in London and later settled in New York, painting urban scenes, landscapes and the occasional high-style Art Deco allegorical piece. Here, he sets his two dancers in a lush landscape filled with flowering trees and delicate colors, the nymph to the left clearly in the midst of Spring, the satyr to the right in the heart of Autumn. The painting is laid out in a fan shape like some exotic souvenir from East Asia; the medium is watercolor on a lovely piece of very fine silk. (Dimensions include matte and frame; fan image is 11 inches high by 21.5 inches wide.)
