Spanish school Painting “Calvario”Baroque - Vallisoletana School

About the Item

One of a kind oil on canvas made at the end of the 17th century. The work deals with the scene of Calvary, present, therefore, Christ crucified, his mother the Virgin Mary to her right, Saint John the Evangelist to her left and Mary Magdalene prostrate at her feet. Taking into account the technique used, as well as the robustness and monumentality of the figures, it can be deduced that it is typical of the Valladolid focus around the dawn of the year 1700. It is a suffering Christ with three nails but with a serene face. Classical body with a light purity cloth, with soft folds. The characters of Mary and Saint John complement each other, not only in the composition and pose, but also in the colors of their clothing. María, with a cap and a dry expression, cries looking at her son while she implores with her hands crossed. Dressed in sculptural folds, an orange cloak can be seen at the bottom. Saint John the Evangelist is presented in profile, with long hair and a goatee, following the fashion of the 17th century. On her side, Mary Magdalene is kneeling and her long red hair falls over her back. The scene is completed, in the foreground, with two skulls that symbolize death. Thanks to the cleaning carried out by the restorer in August 2023, it was possible to extract the landscape from the background, composed of vegetation reminiscent of Venetia and a timid sunset. As well as the sun and the moon, elements typical of the iconography of Calvary. In August 2023, this work underwent a cleaning process by a restorer. It is noted that, originally, the canvas was larger but has been greatly cut down. It was probably part of an altarpiece, a church or a private chapel. Later frame, 20th century, in a pronounced baroque style. Private collection Medina del Campo (Valladolid). Dimensions: 220 x 190 cm without frame. Frame width 15 cm.
