About the Item

An exhibit of paintings by Stanley Donald Tschopp (b. 1935) whose works have been likened to Kandinsky and Klee and in 1968 was hailed as "the new Miro" has opened at Boulevard in Palm Springs, CA. Tschopp has exhibited globally spanning over 50 years including his most recent exhibit (2011-2012) in association with "The Pacific Standard Time, Art in LA 1945-1980" an initiative of The Getty with art institutions across Southern California. Shown above is a piece from his "New World Series" which is characterized by geometric forms and shapes moving through brilliantly colorful backgrounds. Tschopp was born in 1935 in Los Angeles, California and started painting when he was 15 years old. At age 16, using his own savings, Stanley traveled to Europe where he toured the artistic revolution in Germany and France mostly through the medium of modern painting and sculpture. Tschopp also spent time on the Chinese island of Formosa where he was influenced by the transparent coating technique and wood paneling of a Taiwanese painter. In 1957 Stanley returned to the United States and immersed himself in the abstract expressionist movement which at that time was at it's peak. In 1960 after opening his first exhibition in the United States Tschopp moved to Germany where he studied at the University of Heidelberg. Heavily influenced by French cubists Delauney and Kandinsky, action painter Jackson Pollack and the poetry of Wolfgang Borchert, Tschopp illustrates his work as a cosmic world of order and creative free form.
