About the Item
(1901-1967). Oil on canvas; 20" x 24". Very prominent Canadian painter. His works are included in most exhibitions of 20th century Canadian art with dozens of examples in permanent collections of Canadian museums. Humphrey was a member of numerous art organizations and his art displayed in numerous exhibitions. Currently his works are part of the touring exhibition Canada on Canvas, organized by the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

Throughout his life, his works were also exhibited at several commercial galleries such as the Picture Loan Society, Toronto; Robertson Galleries, Ottawa; Walter Klinkhoff Gallery, Montreal; and the Penthouse Gallery, Montreal. Humphrey's works are avidly collected in Canada. They are also in numerous public collections. According to the Canadian Heritage Information Network* there are 111 of his works in the permanent collections of museums across the country. They include: the Winnipeg Art Gallery (Manitoba), Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (Halifax), Owens Art Gallery (Sackville, N.B.), Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (B.C.), Agnes Etherington Art Centre (Kingston, Ontario), Ottawa Art Gallery (Ontario), Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), Confederation Centre Art Gallery & Museum (Charlottetown, P.E.I.), Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery (Concordia University, Montreal), Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, Beaverbrook Art Gallery (Fredericton, New Brunswick), Mackenzie Art Gallery (Regina, Saskatchewan), New Brunswick Museum (St. John), Joliette Art Museum (Quebec), Canadian War Museum (Ottawa), and the National Gallery of Canada, which houses 38 of his works.
Among his numerous awards and honors is a Doctor of Laws conferred by the University of New Brunswick (1951), a Canadian Government-Royal Society Overseas Fellowship to paint in France (1952); a Canada Council Short-term Grant (1958); and a Canada Council Senior Arts Fellowship (1960).
