About the Item
William Rubery Bennett (Australian 1893-1987) River Scene, signed lower right, oil on board, together with Fisherman and Two Women In The Bush, signed lower right, all paintings 15.5cm x 20 cm. Identically framed - frame measurements 22.5cm x 27.5 cm.
William Rubery Bennett was born in Brisbane, Queensland in 1893. He studied at the Royal Queensland Art Society School in Brisbane and in Sydney.
As an impressionist painter his work focused on the Australian landscape. Early in his career he was appointed as the Hon. Secretary of the Queensland Artists Society and, following his move to Sydney in 1923, as supervisor of an exhibition of work by Arthur Streeton and Norman Lindsay for the Queensland Art Society.
He established the Australian Fine Arts Gallery in 1924 in Sydney, later changing its name to the Rubery Bennett Art Gallery. It became a platform for impressionist and contemporary Australian art until its closure in 1956.
Retrospective exhibitions of Bennett’s work were held at the State Library of Queensland in 1993 and the Melbourne Fine art Gallery in 1996. Bennett has work in the National Gallery of Art, Canberra and the Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane.

- Condition:Framed under glazing, the paint surfaces are well preserved, with no evidence of losses or deterioration and the colours are in good condition. The frames have solid joints and minor evidence of general wear and tear.
