Erwin Olaf - JOY (Marc) 1985 Official exhibition Poster

About the Item

Erwin Olaf - JOY (Marc) 1985 From the 'Squares' series - Official exhibition Poster on thick art paper Size 60x80 cm - Copyright Erwin Olaf 1985 / Joy (Marc) / Art Unlimited / Printed in Holland / no.234 - Original Artist Proof photograph is in the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (the Netherlands). "A celebrated example, from which several variants derive, depicts a young model with a bottle of Champagne. Holding the frothing exploding bottle away from him, the youth is shown with his head thrown back as though he were drunk (or in sexual ecstasy) in an obvious allusion to an overpowering ejaculation. By exaggerating the eroticism which underpins virtually all advertising photography, he exposes it. He plays with the pornographic topos of perpetual discharge and perpetual sexual potency, which is paraphrased in another picture in this series. This shows the same model masturbating, holding a carrot instead of his penis. This image toys with the other topos of gay pornography – the size of the male organ." Peter Weiermar Director Franfurter Kunstverein ________________________ JOY The publication ‘Joy’ is the first comprehensive monograph on the Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf. It presents the artist’s choice which brings together major works since the beginning of his career. Quite deliberately, no distinction is made between personal and commissioned work, between his fashion and advertising photography as opposed to reportage and poster work. Irrespective of the nature of the original assignment, they all bear the indelible stamp of the artist; in the presence of the works – whether observed or staged realities – the boundaries blur. The images are hallmarked by visual humour and persistent allusions to the formal expressions of art, the subculture or visual idiom of gay pornography, and the practices of advertising and fashion photography, which Olaf – whose laughter still resounds in my ears – often offsets with punch and poignancy. He is intrigued by transvestism, by that which Susan Sontag defined as ‘camp’, by the artificiality of portraying people and himself in a stage setting. In these the lust is exaggerated, dispelling the gravity without us having to forgo any of the lust. Olaf’s work is distinctly different from the bizarre necrophiliac world of Joel Peter Witkin, or the coded nightmares from depth psychology by someone like Arthur Tress. The references and links are clearly legible in the early images. Artist Statement Peter Weiermar on ‘Squares’ Director Franfurter Kunstverein ________________________ Erwin Olaf's documentary-style photography is influenced by Modernist photographers like Walker Evans, Garry Winogrand, and Diane Arbus. However, his work also demonstrates an connection to Conceptual Art, as he often incorporates symbolism and narrative elements into his images.
