About the Item
Original vintage 1960's coach panel poster by Harry Stevens promoting Express Coach Services to London. This rare poster would have been displayed in a UK travel office or on a coach or bus serving routes around Britain. It colourfully illustrates Dick Whittington (1354-1423) heading to London with his cat, where he subsequently made his fortune and became Lord Mayor.
Eastern National coaches served routes from Bury St Edmunds, the university town of Cambridge, the market towns of Ipswich and Norwich, Newmarket, famous for horse racing, the seaside towns of Yarmouth and Lowestoft, and the harbour of Felixstowe.
The artist, Harry Stevens, was born in Manchester and became a freelance designer, joining the Society of Industrial Artists in 1955. He specialised in poster design for a wide variety of clients, most notably London Transport, where his work can be seen in their museum in London's Covent Garden.
This poster is professionally mounted on linen. This is a conservation process which cleans the poster and allows for ease of handling and framing. The poster is in very good condition with no restoration and will be sent rolled in a sturdy tube.
