Additional Details: Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT) is a French shipping company. Founded in 1855 by the Péreire brothers under the name of Compagnie Générale Maritime, it was responsible for transporting mail to North America and takes its final name in 1861. In 1883, four large cruise ships were put into service. This poster was produced to promote tourism in the Maghreb, particularly in Tunisia via cruises by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. The liner “Ville de Tunis” sails in the background, while in the foreground a woman in traditional clothing sits. She has henna on her hands, arms, face, and is spinning wool using a spindle. The Ville de Tunis is a mixed refrigerated liner built in 1948-1949 by the Lorient arsenal. Launched in September 1949 and commissioned in March 1952, she was lost in 1980 by sea fortune while heading for demolition. After difficult tests, the ship inaugurated the Marseille—Tunis line in March 1953 until 1967. Albert Brenet is a French painter, poster artist and illustrator. In 1936, he was appointed painter of the Navy and air painter, then painter of the Armies in 1959. He sailed the seas of the world on various ships making sketches, oil paintings, gouaches, ships, ports but also scenes of crew life. We have been dealing in art, antiques and vintage posters for more than 50 years and, upon request, we are very happy to provide you with Certificate of Authenticity.
