"The Lady and The Rose", Color Lithograph by Victoria Montesinos

About the Item

This color lithograph is by Victoria Montesinos. It features an elegant lady from early 20th Century holding a rose in her right hand. The artist matches the red of her lipstick with the color of the rose. The large hat covering almost her eyesight gives an overall enigmatic impression to the artwork. It is signed in the bottom right and numbered (33/300) Victoria Montesinos was born in Mexico City in 1944, the daughter of a well-known Mexican movie director, Fernando A. Rivero, and Maty Humana. Sent to live with her grandparents around the age of two, it was not long after that time that she started drawing and painting in response to the serious temperament of her grandmother. According to Vicky, "I became accustomed to enjoying my own world…Drawing was an escape from my communication problems. Besides, drawing was highly rewarding to me." When she was just twelve years old, Vicky's father noticed her talent and offered her the opportunity to study painting with a friend of his, the great Spanish painter, José Bardasano. Having just opened a painting academy, Bardasano welcomed the young Montesinos to study under his direction for five years, initially during school vacations so that she could finish secondary school. This was the beginning of her career as an artist. Vicky has always believed in painting with total integrity, without submitting herself to the judgment of the market, style or expectations of others. The topics she depicts in her paintings are not the product of intellectual analysis, but arise from tastes and affinities that take shape gradually in her mind. When her ideas become clearly defined, Vicky begins to transform the canvas by abolishing its emptiness and nothingness: she stains the cloth, marks the lines, and then continues with brushstrokes, guiding herself intuitively and wisely until reaching the grand finale. In general, she likes to work on various easels at the same time. Montesinos works without deliberations, on large canvases that show ethereal atmospheres overflowing with extravagance and sensuality. The slender bodies she paints appear enveloped in marked brushstrokes that serve as both mantles and tunics. The flowers have silk petals, and invite us to discover their interiors. With her brush, Vicky knows how to share her great sensitivity, and for this reason her paintings captivate collectors and lovers of great art from around the world.

  • The Woman and the Peacock Lithograph by Mr. Blackwell 114/250
    Located in Pasadena, CA
Utilizing the peacock as an emblematic Art Nouveau animal, a favorite of early 20th-century illustrators and designers, Mr. Blackwell, who was born in 1925, delivers a powerfully aesthetic scene between a woman and a peacock in this lithograph, paying homage to both Art Nouveau and Art Deco. He was among others an American fashion critic, television/radio personality, and fashion designer. We can imagine that this drawing was a study for a dress paying homage to the myth and quintessence of the beauty found within peacock feathers. Like any artist, there is a story, structure, composition, and arrangement of the woman and the peacock, creating an iridescent visual of blue, green, and yellow, a dialogue between forms, curves, and lines. It is said that the Eye on the bird’s feathers reminds us that God is always watching. The off-white background is sober, crossed by two simple circular colored shapes, in the lower part. The two subjects initially appear as one entity, but as we move into the scene, we see that the woman is holding the peacock under her arm as one might hold an accessory. Then very quickly, it appears as the main figure, taking over the entire narrative rather than an accessory or a secondary figure. The peacock's regal posture, with its unfurled feathers, contrasts with the woman's near imbalance, almost as if she was fainting. It could also be interpreted as an intimate and seductive dance, where the two subjects come together as one to pay homage to a poetic and metaphorical world where aesthetics, fashion, and onirism converge. Did you know that peacocks use...
