1679 Susanna Von Sandrart, Fountain Bracciano in Rome, Italy, Hand Colored

About the Item

“Fontan in dem Vorhof des Fürstlichen Palasts Bracciano (Fountain Bracciano in Rome, Italy).” Original antique copperplate engraving on early hand-laid paper by German artist and engraver, Susanna von Sandrart. Published in Italy, 1679. It is a large centerfold as issued; however, the original fold is not significantly noticeable. Giovanni Battista Falda (Valduggia 7 December 1643 – 22 August 1678 Rome) was an Italian architect, engraver and artist. He is known for his engravings of both contemporary and antique structures of Rome. Susanne Maria von Sandrart was a German artist and engraver. She was the daughter of engraver Jacob von Sandrart, and most of her work was produced for his workshop. At a young age, Von Sandrart began to learn different means of graphic art, producing artwork from her father's home studio.

Fine folio including early and finely executed portraits of Renaissance artists by Joachim von Sandrart. Included are portraits of: Mino da Fiesole; Giuliano da Sangallo; Domenico Puligo; Andrea da Fiesole, and Properzia de' Rossi. The latter is of particular historical significance in that Properzia de' Rossi (c. 1490 Bologna – 1530 Bologna) was a ground-breaking female Italian Renaissance sculptor, the only woman to receive a biography in Vasari's Lives of the Artists. According to Vasari, she taught herself to carve by working with peach-stones. At the end of her life, she was sought out by the Pope Clement VII, who unfortunately found her dead. Sometimes referred to as the “German Vasari,” Joachim von Sandrart, born in Frankfurt, trained first as a printmaker, notably in Nuremberg, and in Prague with Aegidius Sadeler. He then studied painting from 1625 on, originally in the studio of Gerrit van Honthorst...
