About the Item
Set of 4 18th-C. Italian Architectural Engravings of Rosettes by Carlo Antonioni
Carlo Antonini (Italian, 1740–1821) Four antique hand-colored engravings of architectural rosettes from throughout historic Italian buildings. Each depicts the profile and face view of the rosette. Antonini was a designer, copperplate engraver, and architect who flourished during the last quarter of the 18th century. He worked in Rome and in Modena, producing two great collections of copperplate engravings of ornaments.
This set of four 18th-century hand-colored architectural fragment engravings on paper is magnificent; each one measures 7.5" H x 6" W. Enchanting to gaze at, they depict studies of architectural elements of ancient Italian structures, such as the Arch of Titus, the Temple of Jupiter Tonans, the Arch of Argentari, and a cave in the Basilica of Santa Croce. Painstakingly colored by hand in rich hues of terra-cotta, green, blue, gold, brown, and white, two feature miniature portraits in the center of the colored medallions. Penned in Italian within each etching is a beautifully executed corresponding inscription describing the subject of the piece. All four etchings are professionally matted and presented in matching giltwood frames that measure 13.5" high by 6" wide.
Framed, they each measure 13.5" H x 6" W x 1" D.
Size of prints: 7.5" H x 6" W.
