1979 Nicola Simbari Clown a l’ombrelle Serigraph Woman Umbrella

About the Item

"Vintage 1979 limited edition serigraph print by Nicola Simbari titled “Clown a l’ombelle,” showing a Commedia del Arte style clown holding a brightly colored umbrella; pencil signed and numbered but obscured by mat. “Nicola Simbari is a painter of semi-abstract impressionist works. He is a colorist who favors brilliant tones, richly layered with a palette knife. Simbari paints to convey light and energy and provide new definition through intensity of vision and technique. Born in Calabria, Italy in 1927, Simbari was greatly impacted by the natural setting of his Mediterranean world: the wide sea, intense sky, and vivid flowers. As a young child, he moved with his family to Rome where his father worked as an architect to the Vatican. The City's Renaissance masterpieces and the artistic treasures of the Sistine Chapel so moved Simbari that, before his 13th birthday, he decided to study art and enrolled at the Accademia delle Belle Arti. At 22, he opened his first studio in Rome. Influenced by the sights and sounds of his childhood, Simbari's early works featured gypsies, cafe settings, fishing villages, and rustic scenes of the Italian countryside. The youthful artist knew success early, and within months of a one-man show in London, he was awarded the commission to paint murals for the Italian Pavilion at the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels. His show ""Le Cirque,"" for many, reproduced the same excitement on canvas as can be felt at an electrifying circus performance. ""When I paint, I'm like a writer,"" Simbari states, ""I must have something to say. My paintings are like entries in a diary because they are all reactions to things I have seen or felt."" Although Mediterranean landscapes and portrayals of contemporary European life are Simbari's mainstay, he has recently turned his attention to painting the Southwest. ""There's terrific drama in the desert. It's mysterious and magical, and the most dramatic natural sculpture I've ever seen."" Whether he is capturing the awe-inspiring beauty of a rugged canyon, or the grace of a soaring falcon, Simbari works with the goal of conveying color and emotion. Collections include the Bank of Tokyo, Paris; Christian Dior Collection, Paris; Italian State Railways, Rome; Liberty Company, London; Bank of Commerce, Tulsa; Cincinnati Fine Arts Department, Cincinnati; Exxon Corporation, New York; General Mills Corporation, Minneapolis; Pepsico, New York. Simbari died in 2012.”" Measures: 39.25” x 1” x 44.25” / Sans Frame - 30” x 33.5” (width x depth x height).

Leopard by Mark King. Expressionist serigraph on paper, signed lower right. Limited edition. Mark King, British (1931) Mark King was born in Bombay, India to British parents in 1931. King’s childhood was one of exotic experience and privileged education. After graduating from La Martiniére College in Calcutta, the sixteen-year-old King sailed to England to attend Bournemouth College of Art. There he studied painting, sculpture, architecture and theatre design. Subsequently, he spent seven years as the resident scenic designer at the Oxford Playhouse Theatre. In 1961, he decided to concentrate on painting, and he moved to Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Louvre. It was there that he developed his impressionistic style, influenced by the wealth of examples of European masters. Mark King describes his approach to painting as ninety percent preparation. “It takes a great deal of time for me but once I begin, I work with great impetus, with immense bursts of energy. It is not until the last ten or fifteen minutes before completion that I am able to see where the painting is going and to catch the mood of the moment.” Change has played an important role in both King’s art and life. “I have a need, artistically, for exposure to new ideas and images,” he says, and it was this need that brought him to America in 1968, a move that prompted a shift in his working methods. A landscape painter in France, King began to expand his subject matter to include sports. With his work as a sports artist King found the camera an indispensable tool, and began to work from photographs. Since coming to America...
