About the Item
Antique print titled 'Io changée en Vache (..)'. This print depicts Io changing into a Cow: Mercury cutting off Argus's head. In Greek mythology, Io was a priestess of Hera in Argos, a nymph who was seduced by Zeus, who changed her into a heifer to escape detection. Her mistress Hera set ever-watchful Argus Panoptes to guard her, but Mercury / Hermes was sent to distract the guardian and slay him. This print originates from 'Tafereel, of Beschryving van den prachtigen Tempel der Zang-Godinnen' by B. Picart.
