Botanical Tapestry: A Mosaic of 19th Century American Flora, 1879

About the Item

This original antique artwork reflects the meticulous work of Thomas Meehan, and the images were published by L.Prang and Company in Boston, known for their exquisite chromolithographic work in the 19th century. The book from which these plates come, "The Native Flowers and Ferns of the United States in Their Botanical, Horticultural, and Popular Aspects," serves as a testament to the rich botanical heritage of the United States and the period's appreciation for natural sciences. This compilation showcases six meticulously crafted botanical illustrations from the 19th century, each depicting a different plant species native to the United States. 1. **Anemone nemorosa** (Plate 6): Commonly known as the wood anemone or windflower, this plant features delicate white blooms with a tinge of pink, a central cluster of yellow stamens, and deeply lobed green leaves. It's a spring ephemeral, meaning it completes its life cycle during the brief early spring. 2. **Houstonia caerulea** (Plate 25): Also known as azure bluet or Quaker ladies, this diminutive perennial is characterized by its small, light blue flowers with yellow centers. The plant's foliage is simple and lance-shaped, forming a low-growing tuft. 3. **Viola pedata** (Plate 26): This species, known as the bird's foot violet due to the deeply dissected, bird's foot-like leaves, bears striking bi-colored purple and white flowers. Each flower has five rounded petals and a bright yellow center. 4. **Linum perenne** (Plate 30): Perennial flax, this slender plant, presents delicate blue flowers composed of five petals, complemented by narrow, green leaves. This species is known for its oil-rich seeds, which are used in various applications. 5. **Anemone caroliniana** (Plate 42): The Carolina anemone shows off several star-shaped flowers with a purplish hue, yellow centers, and a lush arrangement of deeply lobed green leaves at the base. 6. **Cuphea viscosissima** (Plate 11): Commonly referred to as the tarweed cuphea or blue waxweed, it is notable for its small, tubular purple flowers with greenish tips and a sticky, hairy stem. These plants' natural beauty and ecological significance are captured with scientific accuracy and an artistic eye, making each print both a botanical study and a piece of art. They serve as a timeless record of America's floral heritage, as perceived during a period of heightened interest in the natural sciences and exploration. The illustrations are detailed, showcasing the beauty and unique characteristics of each plant, and are rendered with a botanical precision that suggests they may have been intended for scientific or educational purposes.
