Charles Capps Pencil Signed Original Etching, 1947, "Into the Hills"

Charles capps etching and aquatint. Unframed, Archivally matted in a 16 x 20 two ply. Titled: "Into the Hills." pencil signed lower right. A Prairie Printmaker print. Edition 100. Image measures: 7" H x 12" W. "Into the Hills," received the 1st Prize from the "Best Prints of the Year" at the Sixth Annual National Exhibition of Prints at the Library of Congress. Charles (Chili) Merrick Capps (1898-1981) was a printmaker especially known for his aquatints and etchings. His friends called him "Chili.” His images included Midwestern scenes, Southwestern subjects and adobe architecture of Taos and Santa Fe. He created his own plates and turned-out editions of about 100. He signed and numbered each one in pencil. In total, he completed about 80 prints, of which half are aquatints, a third etchings and dry points and the others block prints and lithographs. An active member of the Prairie Print Makers of Kansas, he served as its president for 23 years. He was also active in the Society of American Etchers, the Chicago Society of Etchers, Philadelphia Society of Etchers, Northwest Printmakers and Printmakers Society of California.
