About the Item

Hand-colored engraving of a fantastical scene, "Mixing a Recipe for Corns" by the eminent English caricaturist George Cruikshank. Published by George Humphrey, 27 St. James's St., March 31, 1819.

Includes the crazed patient and a menagerie of animals, cat, dog, bird; and a nasty looking concoction bubbling away in the fireplace.

The following description is derived from websites at Harvard and the University of Virginia, both of which hold copies of the work in their collections.

George Cruikshank, one of the prominent caricaturists of the Regency, was born into a family of artists. His father (Isaac), brother (Robert) and son (George Jr.) all created works of graphic satire. An heir to Gillray's artistic reign, Cruikshank succeeded Gillray at the publishing house of H. Humphrey. Cruikshank's style unmistakably shows the Gillray influence.

Cruikshank began creating works as a child. His first work was published in 1806. By 1810 he was fully established as a caricaturist. By the end of the 1840s he had become a committed teetotaler and themes of temperance dominated his work until his death. The highpoint of Cruikshank's work in graphic satire was the 1810s through the 1820s, the early years of the Regency.

In this intricately detailed caricature, Cruikshank's character suffers from extremely painful corns. She has removed her shoe from her left foot to reveal large calluses on her toes. Her pointed, high-heeled shoe on the floor appears to be much smaller than her foot, a definite commentary by the artist on the foolishness of fashionable footwear. To solve her medical problem, the woman resorts to self-medication. There are numerous bottles, herbs, as well as a mortar and pestle on the table, and all sorts of jars and jugs strewn on the floor. She holds a recipe up close to her face with one hand, while stirring an angry, bubbling, burning concoction in the fireplace with her other hand.
