Engraving of the Palace of Henry VIII and Hunting Scene with Greyhounds, 1626
About the Item
The image is an original engraving by Daniel Meisner from his work in Eberhard Kieser's 'Politisches Schatzkästlein' (Political Treasure Box), depicting the Nonsuch Palace in Surrey, England, which was commissioned by Henry VIII. This engraving is part of the 8th and last book from 1626.
Nonsuch Palace was a Tudor architectural marvel and a statement of royal grandeur that no longer exists, having been dismantled in the 17th century. Meisner's engravings often included moralistic or emblematic sayings, which seems to be the case with the text included in this image.
The hunting scene in the engraving depicts a dynamic countryside pursuit, typical of the period's artistic representations of sport and leisure. In the foreground, two greyhounds are in full chase, one of which is in the midst of catching a hare. The hare, caught mid-leap, exhibits both the beauty and desperation of nature in action. The dogs are drawn with attention to muscular detail, showing their breeding for speed and agility.
The background contrasts the immediate action with a more serene landscape, featuring the grand Nonsuch Palace, symbolizing noble life and leisure. The palace is meticulously detailed, with its architectural elements standing out, showcasing its grandeur and importance. The estate is surrounded by manicured gardens or parkland, indicative of the controlled and curated nature of the royal estate, as opposed to the wildness of the hunt taking place in the forefront.
Above the scene, the sky is calm, suggesting that the violence of the hunt is a contained and normal aspect of the otherwise peaceful and ordered world. The inclusion of both the hunt and the palace serves to illustrate the duality of noble life in the era: cultured and refined yet still intimately connected with the rawness of nature.
More about the text in the print:
The text at the top "FULMEN EX PELVI. NONCIITZ. Engellande." can be translated from Latin and a Germanic language.
"Fulmen ex pelvi" is a Latin phrase that can be translated as "Thunderbolt from the basin" or "Lightning from the sky," suggesting a metaphorical or literal depiction of power. "Nonsiitz" or "Nonciitz" does not directly translate from Latin, which suggests it may be a proper noun, perhaps the name of a place, person, or specific event. "Engellande" seems to be an old or alternative spelling of "England."
The text below appears to be in a mix of languages, including Latin and German. Here's a rough translation of the phrases:
- "Ex pede fulmen revera dicitur sese," which translates to "From the foot, the thunderbolt really is said to throw itself."
- "Ein torrwet pocen tollit Onocrotalus," could be a Latin-Germanic mix meaning "A fool may raise a racket like a bittern" (Onocrotalus being an old term for a bittern, a type of bird).
The bottom two lines appear to be in German, roughly translating to:
- "Ein Kropff-Kranck man sie mach gefreyt," which might mean "A goiter-sick man they made free," but the sentence is not in modern standard German.
- "Wer aber falschlich schrey versetzt," which could mean "But whoever falsely cries out."
- "Wirdt weniger als ein hundt geacht," translating to "Is considered less than a dog."
