Harmonious Heraldry: English Musicians from the Reign of Edward III, 1847

About the Item

Title: "Harmonious Heraldry: English Musicians from the Reign of Edward III in 'Costume du Moyen Âge'" Description: This vivid lithograph, featured in the 1847 compendium "Costume du Moyen Âge," presents two English musicians from the time of Edward III. With a flourish of their instruments, these minstrels are caught in the midst of performance, their trumpets raised to the sky in a declaration of musical fanfare. The musician in the foreground wears a vibrant red tunic with a green sleeve, his outfit accented with a golden belt and matching red hose. His brown leather boots are practical for a traveling performer, and his cap, whimsically adorned with three feathers, adds a touch of flamboyance to his character. Turning to his companion, we see a musician clad in a deep blue tunic, his back to the viewer, with golden embellishments that suggest a status perhaps higher than that of a common entertainer. This figure's white headdress and hose contrast with the rich colors of his garb, creating a striking visual palette. The lithograph captures the spirit of the era with attention to the detail of their attire and the bold, energetic posture of the musicians. Their expressions, one focused and the other with cheeks puffed in exertion, convey the intensity of their craft. As in other plates from this collection, the background is minimalist, allowing the rich detail and color of the musicians' costumes to dominate the scene. This image not only depicts the dress and occupation of medieval English musicians but also reflects the social importance of music and ceremony during the reign of Edward III. It serves as a historical document that celebrates the role of the musician in medieval society, highlighting the intricate details of their dress and the vibrancy of their performances. The colors have a nice glow over them. Historically, egg whites, known as glair, and sometimes egg yolk were indeed used in illumination and painting, particularly in manuscripts, to give colors a brighter appearance and to add a sheen or gloss to the work. This technique was quite common during the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance. Egg whites can be applied as a varnish over pigments to enhance their brightness and to protect the colors. This application could make the colors appear more vivid and also add a slight glossy sheen to the surface of the image. Egg yolk, on the other hand, was commonly used as a binding agent in paint. It forms the basis of tempera paint, a medium that was widely used before the advent of oil painting. Egg yolk helps to create a durable and long-lasting color that adheres well to various surfaces. In the context of the print from 1847, it's less likely that egg whites or yolks were used directly on the print, as by that time, commercial printing processes would have been more advanced and less reliant on such manual methods. However, if this print is a representation of an earlier style or is meant to mimic the appearance of hand-painted manuscripts, the original artists might have employed techniques or materials that gave a similar effect to those achieved with egg-based binders and varnishes.
