Lithograph Titled Rest of France Print by Honore Daumier
About the Item
Daumier, Honore (France 1808-1879) Lithograph, Titled "Repos de la france". Published in La Caricature August 28, 1834. Stamped GL for George Longstreet.
The print shows a tired and inactive King Louis-Philippe, taking a nap sitting on some military equipment. Marianne and the rooster, symbols of France, are in the background, both tired and depressed, her hands in chains. The King looks like a crowned pear, while the royal crown is topping his throne. At the left, a gasping cock and a canon muzzle under the throne can be seen while France with her hands tied leans despondently against the throne. After the riots of April 1834, when many Republicans were jailed, France and the mob was resting from their labours.
