Artist exhibited at the Musée des Beaux Arts de Bordeaux, at the Musée de la vénerie de Senlis, at the Musée d'Art moderne et contemporain de Strasbourg, at the Musée Alfred Danicourt de Péronne and at the Villa Domergue in Cannes. >> DOMERGUE Jean- Gabriel (1889-1962) Born in Bordeaux on March 4, 1889, Jean-Gabriel Domergue was immersed in the world of art from his early childhood, thanks to his father, a well-known art critic. Passionate about drawing, it is this culture that pushes him to be interested in engraving, painting and fashion. He studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris and exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1906. Winner of the Prix de Rome in 1911, he met his wife Odette Maugendre, a sculptor, with whom he married in 1918. The two artists mutually enriched their creative and eclectic processes. For example, they worked together to create a villa in Cannes dedicated to decorative art, a theatrical place where sumptuous parties were held. Jean Gabriel Domergue lived a social life, punctuated by parties and meetings, which allowed him to have among his models prestigious actresses and singers such as Josephine Baker, Liane de Pougy or Nadine, future Baroness of Rothschild. The work of Jean Gabriel Domergue is often associated with his portraits of women, they are indeed his favorite subject. He defines himself as "the inventor of the Parisian pin-up". His women are slim with long necks, generally represented in busts, with bright colors to mark a certain graceful casualness. Passionate about fashion, he drew the clothes of the time in his works and collaborated with contemporary couturiers, notably Paul Poiret and Henry Marque. In 1920, he participated in the inauguration of the Salon de la Mode and in various events at the Grand Palais in Paris. His compositions are very marked by the influence of Degas and Toulouse Lautrec (of whom he was the younger cousin) and are also inspired by Cheret and Boldini. He was the author of the first poster for the Cannes Film Festival in 1939. A pictorial testimony to the mores and fashion of the Belle Epoque, his works regularly depict the Parisian and Cannes social life of the elite. At the end of his life, he became curator of the Jacquemart-André Museum in Paris from 1955 to 1962, where he organized exhibitions on the paintings of Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Goya. At his death in 1962, his villa Fiesole located in the district of Californie - Pezou in Cannes was renamed Villa Domergue and registered in 1990 as a historical monument. In 2000, the painter and his wife will be buried in the Etruscan style mausoleum designed for this purpose in the garden of the villa by Odette Maugendre, herself.
