About the Item
Cecil Aldin, Old Inns, The Star Inn.
A very nice colourful framed chromolithograph by Cecil Aldin of The Star Inn, Alfriston, Sussex. The print is printed and published by Eyre & Spottiswoode, Ltd., 4 Middle New Street, London, E.C.4. and signed in pencil by the artist in the bottom left-hand margin with Fine Art Trade Guild blind stamp. On the back board of the print is the original paper label 'Old English Inns by Cecil Aldin. The Star Inn, Alfriston, Sussex'.
Taken from Cecil Aldin, The Story of a Sporting Artist by Roy Heron:-
Aldin's association with Eyre & Spottiswoode began in 1919 when the firm (since absorbed by the Associated Book Publishers' group) concentrated on specialist printing. Thereafter they published most of his prints of old buildings and dogs. A feature of many of the series was the issue of Remarque proofs limited to about fifty copies of each subject, and artist's signed proofs, editions of which ranged up to five hundred copies but which were usually restricted to around two hundred. Old Inns, most of these were in the book of the same title published by Heinemann in 1921. They included The Anchor, Liphook, The Anchor, Porlock Weir, The Angel, Woolhampton, The Bear, Brereton, The Bell, Hurley, The Bell, Tewkesbury, The Bell Waltham St. Lawrence, The Bull, Dartford, The Castle, Chiddingstone, The George, Dorchester, Dorset, The George, Dorchester, Oxon, The George, Norton St. Philip, The George, Saisbury, The Golden Cross, Oxford, The Henry VIII, Hever, The King's Head, Aylesbury, The King's Head, Chigwell, The King's Head, Malmesbury, The King's Head, Ombersley, The Lygon Arms, Broadway, The Mermaid, Rye, The New Inn, Gloucester, The Pomfret Arms, Towcester, The Red Lion, Banbury, The Spread Eagle, Midhurst, The Star, Alfriston, The Talbot, Chaddesley, Corbett & The Valentine.
