Pair Prints of French Noble Couples of 16th Century Made Mid-19th Century France

A pair of outstanding prints of French nobles of the 16th century. The costumes are exquisite! The captions under each figure indicate that the figures and their costumes were from the period of Henri III and Henri IV, Kings of France, The stylish costumes are beautifully rendered. The history is fascinating. On the back of the print on the left, the captions read; Conseil au Parlément de Paris and Marie Le Jars De Gournay on the print on the right, the captions read, "Anne De Thou (dame de Chiverni)" and "Premier Président au Parlement de Paris." Dimensions: 15.25" wide x 13.25" height Condition: Excellent, with the very slightest wear consistent with age and use Price: $880 On the reverse of one print, two labels say: (the translation in English is below the French); Costumes Historiques XXXIX PREMIER PRESIDENT AU PARLEMENT DE PARIS sous le Règne de Henri III Cette figure est tirée des portefeuilles de Gaignières (LX,99). Ce costume consiste en un manteau et en une longue robe, tous deux éclarlates. Le manteau, en forme de dalmatique* est doublé d'hermine,. Le chaperon est aussi d'hermine, et le bonnet, orné d'un galon d'or d'or dans sa partie supérieure, est noir. * a wide-sleeved, long, loose vestment open at the sides, worn by deacons, bishops, and some monarchs at their coronation. LXIII FRANÇOISE ROBERTET, dame de Rostaing.-Elle descendait de Florimond Robertet, général de finances, soud Francois Ier; elle fut mariée à Trsitan de Rostaing, baron de Brou et de Guerche, gand-maître des eaux et Fôrets de France, lieutennant-général au governement de i'lle de France et capitaine de Fontainebleau. Cette figure reproduit un portrait original de la galerie du marquis de Lavarets din. (GAIGNIÈRES, portef. X,11.) Historical Costumes XXXIX FIRST PRESIDENT IN THE PARLIAMENT OF PARIS under the Reign of Henri III This figure is taken from the portfolios of Gaignières (LX,99). This costume consists of a cloak and a long robe, both in sparkle. The mantle, shaped like a dalmatic*, is lined with ermine. The hood is also of ermine, and the cap, adorned with a gold braid in its upper part, is black. * a wide-sleeved, long, loose vestment open at the sides, worn by deacons, bishops, and some monarchs at their coronation. LXIII FRANÇOISE ROBERTET, lady of Rostaing. She was descended from Florimond Robertet, general of finances, soud Francois Ier; she was married to Tristan de Rostaing, baron de Brou et de Guerche, grand-master of the waters and forests of France, lieutenant-general in the government of Ile de France and captain of Fontainebleau. This figure reproduces an original portrait from the Marquis de Lavarets din gallery. (GAIGNIÈRES, portfolio X,11.)
