Hunting and Gathering Across Continents in a Collage of Five Engravings, 1813
Located in Langweer, NL
Lot of 5 col. aquatints, by Mathew DUBOURG after various artists.
These original antique prints were drawn (designated by "Del.", short for delineavit, Latin for "he/she drew it") by J.H. Clark and were published and sold on May 1st, 1813.
Edw. Orme Bend Street London" refers to Edward Orme, a publisher based on Bond Street in London, known for producing and selling high-quality prints during the early 19th century.
The term "Sculp", short for "sculpsit," indicates the engraver, in this case, M. Dubourg, who would have been responsible for engraving the images onto a surface for printing. These details highlight that the prints are of English origin and were produced by notable figures in the London art scene at the time. Edward Orme's establishment was a significant purveyor of prints, and such detailed works would have been collected by those with an interest in art, culture, and the wider world.
This date places the prints in the early 19th century, a period rich in exploration and documentation of various cultures around the world through art. These prints would have served as a way for people to see and learn about activities and practices from different parts of the world that they might never have the chance to witness in person. The detailed and colored nature of the prints suggests that they were likely intended for an audience with an interest in the exotic and the educational.
Description: This collection of five prints offers a vivid tableau of hunting and gathering practices from various corners of the globe during the 18th and 19th centuries. Each print captures a moment of interaction between humans and nature, showcasing the diverse methods and environments in which these activities took place.

Gottfried Mind (1768 - 1814) was a talented Swiss artist and draftsman who specialized in children and animal motifs. Because of his successful cat drawings, he became known as Cat Raphael.
Mind grew up in modest circumstances, was physically handicapped and mentally retarded. Even as a child, he attracted attention with his talent for drawing and carving. Around 1775-1780 he lived in Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi's Neuhof educational and labour institution in Birr, where he showed talent in the field of fine arts, but was unable to learn to write or do arithmetic. After the Neuhof was closed in 1780, he was taken in by the family of the Bernese painter Sigmund Freudenberger...

On with your dead: & I’ll contrive to hurry this old Fool alive.
Original Aquatint & Etching plate with original hand colour.
Full margins and only very minor marginal wear.
Rudolph Ackermann, London, 1815.
Thomas Rowlandson: Along with Hogarth, Gillray and Cruikshank, Thomas Rowlandson is at the uppermost peak of English satirical art. Amongst these masters, however, Rowlandson was the most gifted artist and his compositions always seemed the closest to the truth for he often lived the dissipated style of life he so memorably satirized. Along with Hogarth, Gillray and Cruikshank, Thomas Rowlandson is at the uppermost peak of English satirical art. Amongst these masters, however, Rowlandson was the most gifted artist and his compositions always seemed the closest to the truth for he often lived the dissipated style of life he so memorably satirized. After studying in both Paris and London, Thomas Rowlandson began his career as a portrait painter. By 1782, however, he devoted himself almost exclusively to his first love; caricature and satirical art. After receiving a large inheritance, Thomas Rowlandson quickly gambled it away. After losing his fortune at a thirty-six hour card game he is known to have exclaimed, "I've played the fool, but (holding up his pencils) here is my resource."
Working with such British publishers as Flores and Thomas Tegg, Thomas Rowlandson designed many memorable satires. His greatest work, however, lay ahead in the early nineteenth century when he collaborated with the famous London publisher, Rudolph Ackermann, to produce some of the finest satirical series in the history of art. These included The Microcosm of London (1808), the Tour of Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque (1812) and The English Dance of Death...

32 x 27 cm on a leaf measuring 47 x 55 cm.
Extremely rare example of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s comparative chart to depict the relative height of mountains, thus defining a cartographic style that would flourish throughout the remainder of the 19th century.
This map is extremely scarce. It was issued and sold independently in Paris, 1813.
Beginning in 1805, Goethe gave lectures on natural sciences to a group of Weimar women on Wednesday mornings. The audience included the Duchess Luise, Schiller's widow Charlotte and her sister Caroline von Wolzogen. Here Goethe used his image of heights on April 1, 1807 for the first time. A copy was sent to Alexander von Humboldt...
