About the Item
Limited edition three color letterpress print signed, titled and numbered by Betty Guy. The debossed print is titled "San Francisco Opera Opening Night 1979", it is numbered 8/50. The print is professionally framed and matted in a wooden gold toned frame.
The opera was La Gioconda starring Luciano Pavarotti and Renata Scotto. The opening night financed by Ann and Gordan Getty was considered the society event of the year in San Francisco. The year 1979 in particular was the most dazzling in several seasons with celebrities flying in from Europe and New York.
Betty Guy ( 1920-2016 ) was a noted artist with her works shown around the world. As a lover of the Opera she was a 'resident artist" for the San Francisco Opera. When Queen Elizabeth II visited San Francisco with Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in the 1980s, her Highness was presented with a Betty Guy painting as a gift from the Port of San Francisco. The Port Director was sent a letter from Buckingham Palace that read, "Thank you for the splendid painting by Betty Guy… the picture will always awaken some very happy memories of their stay in your lovely city."
