Sea Battle with the English Destroying French Ships in the Nine Year War, c.1700

About the Item

Antique print titled 'Abbildung der See-Schlacht, darinnen die Englisch und Hollandischen Siegreich gegen die Französische Flotta gestochen haben 1692'. Old print depicting the Action at La Hogue, 1692. The Action at La Hogue occurred during the pursuit by the English of the French fleet after the Battle of Barfleur on 19 May Old Style (29 May (New Style)), 1692, during the Nine Years' War. The pursuing English fleet, under the command of Admiral of the Fleet Edward Russell, 1st Earl of Orford, destroyed a number of French ships that had been beached near the port of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue. This print originates from Merian's 'Theatrum Europaeum'. Theatrum Europaeum was a journal on the history of the German-speaking lands by Matthäus Merian, published between 1633 and 1738 in 21 quarto volumes. Artists and Engravers: Matthäus Merian der Ältere (or "Matthew", "the Elder", or "Sr."; 22 September 1593 – 19 June 1650) was a Swiss-born engraver who worked in Frankfurt for most of his career, where he also ran a publishing house. He was a member of the patrician Basel Merian family. Condition: Good, repair upper left corner. Please study image carefully.
