About the Item

A set of six of exceptional quality 18th century hand-colored engravings Buchoz, Pierre Joseph. Collection précieuse et enluminée des fleurs les plus belles et les plus curieuses, qui se cultivent tant dans les jardins de la Chine, que dans ceux de l'Europe Paris: Lacombe, 1776-79. Why we like them Beautifully hand-colored, these exquisite pictures will adorn the most elaborate or Minimalist interiors. Buchoz was the first European to copy the oriental style and aimed this work not just at naturalists and painters, but also at porcelain and textile manufacturers. The first volume, in which the highly decorative plates are captioned in Chinese characters, is devoted to flowers native to China, many featuring birds, butterflies and insects, with pale blue skies and rocky backgrounds. The second volume illustrates in a similar style flowers grown in the gardens of Europe. Plate size: ~ 13 in x 8.5 in ~ 33 cm x 22 cm.

The subtlety of colours, bold yet not garish, lend a 'noble' look to the piece. History Such luxurious items were popular in England during the height of fashion for oriental exoticism, called chinoiserie in Europe.  The young Prince of Wales (future King George IV) was often described as having a wildly extravagant taste in decorating his palaces. As early as 1801, the Prince had been completely taken by Oriental tastes and began to expand his existing Brighton retreat. Having been presented a gift of Chinese wallpaper, he ordered a Chinese Gallery to display the new paper. The 162-foot long room was contrived of painted glass decorated with flowers, insects, fruit and birds. The Prince's desire for additional structures in the Oriental manner resulted in commissioning the fashionable architect John Nash and the designer Frederick Crace...
