18th Century Fine Brussels Tapestry, Silk Wool, Green, Blue, Mythological Theme
About the Item
This very fine Oudenaarde tapestry is one in the series related to the mythological story of Ulysses. It was woven in the late 18th century using the highest quality wool and silk. We believe the subject here dissipates a battle scene of mycological animals that were transformed by Circe, being fought by Ulysses. It also showcases a fountain and a garden in the foreground and two parrots on life like trees on each side.
Circe was a goddess Pharmakeia (sorceress) who lived with her nymph attendants on the mythical island of Aiaia. She was skilled in the magic of metamorphosis, the power of illusion, and the dark art of necromancy. When Odysseus landed on her island she transformed his men into animals, but with the help of the god Hermes and Ulysses, he overcame the goddess and forced her to release his men from her spell.

Tapestry manufacture at Aubusson, in the upper valley of the Creuse in central France, may have developed from looms in isolated family workshops established by Flemings that are noted in documents from the 16th century. Typically, Aubusson tapestries depended on engravings as a design source or the full-scale cartoons from which the low-warp tapestry-weavers worked. As with Flemish and Parisian tapestries...Category
