Aubusson Tapestry Hand Woven by Marc Saint Saens France 1950, Style of Lurcat

About the Item

Handwoven original wool tapestry "Le Reveille Matin" ('The Alarm Clock') designed by Marc Saint Saens (1903-1973), Aubusson and woven by Rene Baudonnet. Saint Saens was known as an influential Expressionist painter as well as a major artist in the Rebirth of tapestry in France. He along with Jean Lurcat and Jean Picart Le Doux founded the Association of Tapestry Carton-Painters in 1947 which was the beginning of the revival of 20th century tapestries. They specialized in the Goblin technique, well-known from the north European 'Mille Fleurs' tapestries of the 17th century. This technique enables the artist to make refined multi-color weaves with a strong optical effect.
