Collection of Three Framed Pre-Columbian Textile Fragment Bird Motifs Chimu Peru

About the Item

A lovely collection of three framed pre-Columbian textile fragment form Chimu culture (900AD-1470AD) in nowadays Peru circa 13-15th century. The three panels appear to be woven from dyed cotton and all depict birds or bird-like forms in various designs and presented in different wood frames. Two are panels with tassels suggesting that they may be fragment from a garment or shawl. Bird motif was one of the most popular symbols found in textiles in Chimu and Chancay cultures. The respective size crosswise is 20" x 8.5 x 1", 12.5" x 4" x1" and 14,5" x 11.5" x 1.5". The listed size is for packaging purpose.

  • Framed Pre-Columbian Woven Textile from Chancay Culture
    Located in Atlanta, GA
    An antique pre-Columbia textile panel from Chancay culture in Central coast of nowadays Peru. Chancay culture thrived in the late Intermediate period/ late Horizon circa AD. 1000-1470. The panel appears to be an intact shawl or head scarf, indicated by the overall integrity with the finished edges. It is a gauze-like linen/cotton open-square woven panel with supplemental embroidered horizontal bands that alternate between hooked diamond motifs and silhouettes of perched seabirds, one of the most favored animal forms in Chancay art. The color is quite vibrant with red contrasted by two shades of yellow on a darker brown background. The scarf such as this is thought to be associated with ceremonies and magic realm of death and burial practice.
