Important Monumental Italian Church Altar Frontal Antependium

About the Item

A magnificent Italian church antependium altar frontal, acquired from the estate of the iconic American oil tycoon, T. Boone Pickens. The last photo shows a second altar frontal we have available from the same estate. The monumental sized tapestry panel features beautiful contrasting red and gold colors, a central embroidered fanciful gilt cross, layered band with fringe, cloth over wooden frame. An absolutely stunning religious wall hanging. A beautiful and rare example, in good overall condition, with warm, elegantly aged patina, worn and distressed, rich coloring, luxurious tones and antique glow, having character marks and historic depth. Provenance: From the estate of the late T. Boone Pickens (1928-2019). An American business magnate, billionaire, financier, and philanthropist. Dimensions (approx) 36.5"H, 92.75"W, 2"D Acquisition: J. Garrett Auctioneers had the pleasure of presenting Pickens' collection of 18th and 19th Century furnishings and accessories. The breadth of T. Boone Pickens' career is impressive. He built one of the largest independent natural gas oil companies in the United States and flourished as an entrepreneur thereafter, generating hundreds of billions of dollars in the process. Among his lengthy accolades, Time magazine has identified him one of its "100 Most Influential People", Financial World named him "CEO of the Decade" in 1989, and Oil and Gas Investor identified him as one of the "100 Most Influential People of the Petroleum Century."

Hand-crafted in Mexico in the 19th century, having a shaped demilune marbleized - faux marble painted wooden top, over substantial solid pine bowfront base with hand carved detailing and decorative molded paneling.   • 19th Century Moorish Revival Bronze Architectural Model Panel

    A scarce antique Moorish architectural model thin bronze plaque from the late 19th century. This architectural model features a symmetrical design, the bronze frame having three sections, each panel with large traditional Moorish architecture rounded horseshoe - keyhole arch, flanked by xa pair of smaller pierced arches, finely detailed, decorated in intricate relief work, with light arabesque motif, Islamic calligraphy inscriptions, two large Star of David hexagrams, and notched saw toothed edge ornamentation. Provenance: From the highly curated contents of well regarded professional antique dealers, Ed and Jane Grant, who retired after four decades in the industry. The couple supplied both their Washington metro based antique shop, Grant Antiques, and their very fine quality Connecticut showcase, E.J. Grant Antiques, with domestic and imported pieces. World travelers who especially loved European antiques, sourced their merchandise during their frequent buying trips to Europe and Asia and included purchases originating in France, the British Isles, Italy, Spain, and beyond. "We have never been content with our established route. England is our first and favorite country and furniture. Then we discovered France. Then Holland and Belgium. On to Italy, Spain, then Scandinavia and later China. As always, bits and pieces from the U.S.," explains Jane in her memoirs of their 40 years as antiques dealers. Upon closing their antiques businesses (which were considered prominent sources for quality, diversity, and condition), the contents were carefully moved to a storage facility in Trumbull, CT awaiting the auction.
