Antique French Butcher's Horse Meat 'Boucherie Chevaline' Advertising Trade Sign

About the Item

This antique butcher shop horse meat advertising sign, or Boucherie Chevaline' has no maker's marks, but presumed to have originated from France and dating to approximately 1880 and done in the period Victorian style. The ornately cast horses head is composed of metal, possibly zinc or spelter, which has a deep gilt patination. The horses head is mounted to its original wooden planked mounting plaque which is painted black with a gilt molding around the edges. These figural horse heads would hang outside of the butcher shop above the door, advertising that the establishment sold horse meat.
