Antique French Carved and Incurved Oak Bas Relief Plaque of St Luke, circa 1720

About the Item

A magnificent display of mastery level woodworking, this antique oval plaque of St Luke was not only carved in bas relief, but it has an incurved shape. The concave plaque has several rings of quarter round borders along the edge, with four floral margents that traverse across all tiers of the molding. In the center of the plaque is St Luke holding a book, inkwell, and quill in his left hand, while his right hand is cradling the head of a bull. It is common for Luke to be depicted in art with either an ox or a bull, and as an author of Scripture, he is frequently shown holding a book, a pen, or both. Hand carved in the Regence period, circa 1720, the scene is mostly bas relief, however, there are a few elements that are mid relief, such as Luke’s head, his right knee, and part of the bull’s head. In addition, the curvature of the wood makes for quite an amazing view from any angle. The plaque currently is affixed to a contemporary stand with a painted black base, but there is also an eyelet in the back to hang this exquisitely carved plaque of St Luke on a wall in a hallway, living room, or bedroom.
