German Phanolith wall plate by Jean Baptist Stahl for Mettlach Villeroy and Boch, 1898 This wall plate is made by the Mettlach factory of Villeroy and Boch, by Jean Baptist Stahl Jean-Baptiste Stahl (German 1869 – 1932) was the inventor and designer of the Phanolith. Phanolith is a kind of porcelain that combines the characteristics and benefits of jasperware and pâte-sur-pâte. It was developed at Villeroy & Boch in Mettlach, Germany, at the end of the nineteenth century. The Phanolith first gained wide public attention at the World's Fair 1900 in Paris. Signed J. Stahl, lower left of the loader. This work is fully singed and numbered, the back of the wall plate is stamped for shape number pattern number 2443, and Mettlach and VB for Villeroy & Boch. The abbey brand is at the top and the date code for (18)98. The measurement is 46 cm diagonal and 4,5 cm high The weight is 3575 grams.
