"November 4th, " Powerful and Poignant World War I Memorial, Sculptural Bronze

About the Item

Rare and gorgeous, this bronze memorial panel was sculpted by Egidio Boninsegna, one of Milan's most celebrated sculptors in the early to mid-20th century. Here he memorializes over a half million Italian soldiers who died in the First World War, poignantly depicting a half-draped male soldier being carried to his tomb by an angel and a frieze of mourning figures. (In Italy, the end of the war is celebrated on November 4th, the day of the Armistice of Villa Giusti.) Both the angel and the fallen soldier show deep, hollowed-out eyes, indicating the suffering and grief caused by the war. In the background is a great memorial tomb complete with fluted columns and another frieze of mourning figures. The relief clearly shows the naturalistic influence of Auguste Rodin, as well as the Art Nouveau and Secessionist movements. Boninsegna is best known for the creation of numerous tombs for the Monumental Cemetery and the Musocco Cemetery in Milan. He also sculpted the monument dedicated to the Milanese painter Filippo Carcano in 1915.
