"Three Gongs" -- A Monotype by Harry Bertoia
About the Item
Bertoia used the monotype process as a kind of laboratory. These prints are, in effect, his sketchbook; the two-dimensional surface, rather than limiting him, seemed to allow him even greater flexibility. Whether topological fantasy, plan for a commissioned public work, or sophisticated doodle, Bertoia's monotypes all evince the same restless genius.
Educated at Cranbrook, where he then taught, Bertoia is of course best known for his contributions to the morphology of the modern chair. His airy, space-defing chairs for Knoll, made from welded steel wire were preceded by the family of molded-plywood "Eames" chairs that he helped his former Cranbrook classmates Charles and Ray Eames design in the mid-1940s.
Bertoia's royalties from his work for Knoll allowed him to concentrate almost entirely on artistic experimentation. His famous "sounding" sculptures, which he created out of tightly grouped metal rods, are pioneering examples of kinetic art.
Bertoia's multidisciplinary, explorative sensibility should not obscure the fact of the consistency of his vision. Though comfortable in many media, Bertoia always asks the same questions of space. This is no less true of his works on paper than it is of his sculptures and chairs.
